aotihav This debut makes Unexpect's later albums and EP easier to contextualize. It features elements that would be heavily refined with those later releases, but in this debut their sound is notably easier to draw comparisons to late 90s/early 00's bands marrying classical and romantic metal aspects. There's a heavy undertone of gothic metal and the kind of sonic territory bands like Ram-Zet were toying with, not to mention formative power metal, all tied together with ambitious compositions + playing.

Ken Goodey I feel like the members of Unexpect are in some way members of my extended family. I first heard their music while 'rambling' on MySpace and I thought it was unlike anything else I'd heard. I messaged the band to give them a 'like' and quickly received a thanks from the bassist. Now I don't expect this kind of contact from every artist, but these occasional contacts with musicians I respect is all part of the pleasure of being into styles of music that aren't what you'd call mainstream. Favorite track: In Velvet Coffins we Sleep.
